God encourages Joan to learn chess, which she seemingly masters
far easier than her high school social life. Joan learns about
cause and effect in chess and life after reluctantly letting
some "cool" girls pressure her into trying to confirm a rumor
about her chemistry class partner, Grace. After her investigation
ends up hurting Grace and creates a different sort of rumor
about herself among the popular set, Joan finally makes an important
decision about the type of person she wants to be. Meanwhile,
Will is forced to work with a psychic on the case of a missing
toddler, and Helen becomes fixated on the possibility of a miracle
that would enable Kevin to walk again.
