Though she knows she should be glad that Adam has dropped his
romance with Iris for her, Joan still isn’t sure what she offers
that would merit his attention. Seeking a chance to prove she’s
worthy, she follows God’s suggestion to work on the school yearbook,
even though her mom supervises the class. But her dreams suffer
a set back when, after yearbook editor Brian Beaumont assigns
her to take pictures, she learns that Iris is a staff photographer,
too. And after Joan’s pictures turn out to be worthless, the
ever-efficient Brian summarily fires her. Meanwhile, as Luke
wrestles with losing Friedman to a new girlfriend, Will and
Toni are assigned to a sting aimed at catching a man in the
act of hiring someone to kill his wife. When God encourages
her not to give up, skeptical that she can help -- especially
now that the deadlines for publication are upon them -- Brian
offers Joan the job of running errands for the staff. Yet, even
this ends in disaster when, already humiliated by losing the
photographer’s job, Joan inadvertently throws away all of the
yearbook’s poetry submissions. As her mom intervenes to keep
Brian from berating her further, Joan sets out to recover the
lost poems from the garbage. However, when the one good poem
of the bunch turns out to be unsigned, Brian won’t risk his
reputation to publish it. Upon learning from Adam that the poem’s
author is Grace, her refusal to have her name attached to it
leaves Joan feeling like a failure yet again. But as the search
for the poem serves to help her better understand her mom and
Adam, Joan finds a way to send Grace’s words into the world
without compromising her anonymity. Finally, as both Will and
Toni are disappointed when the otherwise well-meaning husband
and father gets caught in the murder-for-hire sting, Luke discovers
that Friedman’s girlfriend was a story he dreamed up to help
him cope with the fact that everyone else was already dating.
