During a trip to the supermarket with Joan and Luke, Kevin runs
into his ex-girlfriend, Beth Reinhart. Still angry over being
abandoned after his accident, Kevin curtly dismisses Beth. But
when she tracks him down at work, Beth claims that he was the
one who abandoned her. Meanwhile, as Helen is disappointed in
Will's reaction to a new painting, God tells Joan to do an extra
credit chemistry assignment about cosmetics. And as the result
of a chance encounter in a neighborhood drugstore, Will breaks
up a teen prostitution ring. As Helen is struggling to create
a series of new works for a local gallery, Beth drops in to
explain her long absence from the Girardi home. Although Helen
says that she should speak with her son, when Kevin finds them
together, he angrily orders Beth to leave. While using make
up has made Glynis more attractive, Joan is disappointed when
her own efforts fail to make an impression on Adam. And as Will
is dubbed a hero for rescuing the teenage sex slaves, Helen
can't seem to find the inspiration she needs for her new paintings.
Though disappointed in Adam's failure to notice her new look,
Joan realizes that God intended to teach her something about
the fallacy of beauty. As Joan is purging her wardrobe of all
its frills, she tells Kevin that Beth was at the hospital every
day after his accident, but was not allowed to see him. And
when he goes to apologize, Kevin discovers that he's the one
to blame for their relationship's failure. With Glynis' new
look coming between her and Luke, Joan discovers that Adam's
interest in her extends beneath the surface as the two of them
realize that honesty about who they is critically important
if their relationship is to grow. Finally, after a TV news interview
exposes Will's own vanity, Helen burns her new paintings after
realizing that they have turned her into someone she doesn't
like.
