Between the stress of final exams and finding time with Adam
now that he is working at a local hotel, Joan feels especially
put upon when God tells her to get her boyfriend a gift. Realizing
just how little she knows about him, Joan turns to her friends,
Luke, and even Adam himself, for suggestions, only to come up
empty-handed. Encouraged by God to keep trying, she discretely
looks through Adam’s backpack for an idea and is stunned to
find a condom. Meanwhile, the plea bargain Will arranges for
first-time offender Ben Pollack inspires a scathing article
criticizing the legal system by the newspaper’s new courthouse
reporter, Kevin. With Luke still trying to get over his break
up with Glynis, Joan asks Grace if she’s now expected to have
sex with Adam. As her knowledge of the condom makes her increasingly
uncomfortable, God’s cryptic advice leaves Joan unsure about
how to proceed. So, as Luke is struggling to find the right
moment to give Grace a gift, Joan heads to the hotel prepared
to do whatever she has to do. Meanwhile, with his son’s article
putting him in a difficult position, Will reminds Kevin that
Pollack is holding down two jobs in order to pay child support,
and that a hard-nosed approach to sentencing doesn’t always
account for circumstances that can cause otherwise good people
to break the law. At the hotel, Adam takes Joan inside an expensive
suite to talk. However, even when she tells him how finding
the condom in his backpack has led her to conclude that it is
a sign, the fear of ruining their friendship stops them before
things go very far. And after Adam admits that he took the hotel
job after health problems forced his dad to stop working, Joan
sees that the gift he needs right now is faith in himself. Finally,
upon returning home to her worried parents, Joan insists that,
despite appearances, nothing happened with Adam. And following
a heart-to-heart talk that convinces Helen that she and Will
have done a good job raising her, Joan gives Adam a picture
of an artist who also struggled against the odds before finding
success.
