As Helen struggles to understand her own disturbing dreams about
God, Joan must fight off a sudden illness as she fends off rampant
rumors that she and Adam had sex. When the symptoms continue
to get worse, God tells Joan that she will need to see a doctor.
But, as Helen’s dreams send her to a church in search of her
dreams’ deeper meaning, when Joan collapses at school and is
rushed to the hospital, her mom is mysteriously drawn to the
emergency room, too. In a domestic dispute that has spun out
of control, Will and Toni find Walter Washington demanding to
see his mother while holding his pregnant wife, Denise, at gunpoint.
When Ruth Washington accuses Denise of abuse, Walter accidentally
shoots her instead. Stunned by Ruth’s miraculous recovery, Will
follows her to the hospital where he unexpectedly runs into
the rest of his family. And when Joan is diagnosed with Lyme
Disease, she’s left wondering if her conversations with God
were just hallucinations, while, back at work, Will learns that
a last minute hallway conversation with Ruth could only have
occurred after she died. With Grace and Luke heading home to
rest, Adam slips into Joan’s hospital room seeking comfort from
Helen. Upon waking, Joan bravely tells Adam about her talks
with God, only to have his skepticism leave her hurt and refusing
to say anything more. Finally, as their walk home together reveals
the intensity of the feelings between Luke and Grace, Joan tells
her parents that she doesn’t believe there is a God, only to
then have him slip into the room unnoticed after everyone has
fallen asleep.
